Red Cross update on emergency aid in Morocco
Nine months ago, Morocco was rocked by a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8. This disaster mainly affected the High Atlas Mountains, causing thousands of people to lose their homes and critical infrastructure to be severely damaged. In these difficult times, Vebego Foundation supported the Red Cross to provide effective emergency aid. This support allowed the Red Cross not only to provide immediate relief, but also to prepare communities for winter and work towards long-term recovery.
Immediate emergency aid and recovery
The Red Cross has deployed emergency response teams, providing life-saving aid and distributing essential non-food items. So far, 324 volunteers and 30 employees have contributed to these efforts.
Preparation for the winter
With winter approaching, the Red Cross has distributed 36 winter-ready tents and launched a pilot project to build 156 Transitional Shelter Units (TSU) to protect households from the cold. In Chichaoua, Taroudant and El Haouz, local teams are being trained to install 100 units.
Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)
The Red Cross WASH team assisted 5,164 people by installing latrines, showers and water points. Clean-up campaigns and the installation of incinerators contribute to better hygiene and a reduction in the risk of disease.
Food and livelihood security
To support the communities, programmes have been set up that include the distribution of livestock, seeds and the planting of trees. Farmers are also being trained and economic empowerment of women (handicrafts, cooperatives) is being encouraged.
Psychosocial support
The Red Cross provided first aid and psychological support to approximately 50,000 people. Plans are being made for further capacity building and community-based health and emergency services.
Lasting impact
Emergency relief activities will continue while reconstruction and recovery programmes are being expanded. The Red Cross continues to invest in disaster response capabilities to help affected communities.
Vebego Foundation is proud to contribute to this effort and thanks everyone – and in particular the Red Cross staff and volunteers – who contributed to the success of this project.
